Orleans Look Out

November 1997 Run - Orleans Mountain Lookout

For our November run we decided to go to Orlean's Lookout for a Christmas tree run. We met at Cinnabar Sam's at 9:00 and left for the trail around 10:00. There were 6 rigs and 11 people for the run. We had two guests from the Redding area who came over in their Toyota pickup to go on our run. They were Larry and Patton Bailey, a father and son team. I might say that they did an excellent job getting through the tough areas. Also on the run were Jim and Lee Frazier in Jim's Jeep, Scott Reinsmith in his Wrangler, Jeff Kimes with a passenger from Colorado in his Bronco, Dave Tiller and Devon Demontigny in his Ranger, and, of course Bryan and myself in my Wrangler.

The run started out as being quite uneventful until we found the snow level. This is when the fun began with Dave in the lead and myself last, we started the slip and slide up the snowy incline. With a little perseverance and some good driving 4 out of the 6 made it to the lookout. Dave was having a little trouble on the last stretch, so he waved Jim on. With a heavy throttle and about a 4 foot pull from his winch, Jim was the first to the top. After driving sideways (lockers in the snow are always interesting), on a couple of tough spots I finally made it to the lookout.

Jeff's passenger said that the snow was nothing like Colorado, but the view of the wilderness areas were as great as anything he has ever seen. The two that didn't manage to drive to the top were the Bronco and the stock Wrangler. Neither one of those rigs were running an aggressive tire and both gave it a great try.

Another successful run over, we turned around and made the return
trip home. Most of us were home by 6:00.
